Sweet Musings Book Club
I just finished reading the book Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple. It was an adorable story filled with the most charmingly crazy characters. This story is told through letters and emails from different characters throughout the story. It is a work of genius how well each of these pieces work together to tell this tale. It has some serious themes and yet it keeps you laughing out loud from start to finish.
Bee is the daughter of Bernadette and Elgin. She is an incredibly intelligent child who is attending Galer School and who has just been accepted to Choate. As a reward for her good grades her parents let her choose anything she wants, and what she wants is a trip to Antarctica. This puts Bee's neurotic mom, Bernadette, a little over the edge and she isn't sure how she can go on this trip, interact with people, and cross Drake Passage, and still remain sane.
Bernadette is easily pushed over the edge. She has a tendency to be a little anxious and nervous and definitely anti-social. Despite this behavior her and Bee are not only mother and daughter but they are best friends. When Egin decides Bernadette needs help with her behavior and numerous miscommunications ensue Bee and Elgin must try to find a missing Bernadette.
This is probably one of my favorite books. It's funny, and charming, and unique. Has anyone else read this, and if so, what did you think?
