Diary of a Freelancer

January is by far my least favorite month. The holidays and the fun is over and it's cold and bitter and seems like spring won't ever get here. And then to top it off it is my slowest month. It makes me crazy. I get stressed about work like I'm never going to pick up again. It's bad… and I also know it's not rational, but I just can't help it.

So this January I got my accounting together early, so it's ready for taxes. I've been sending my marketing book out to any and every agent and publisher I can get an address for. And I've been taking classes. The above images are from Skillshare, Dallas Shaw's Drawing Couture: Turning Fashion Designs into Art. It was an awesome class! Dallas Shaw walks your through the steps of her process in an easy to understand manner and it was awesome to learn from an illustrator I admire so much.

She uses watercolor, color pencil, and ink to create her illustrations. So these are my trials so far with her technique. I absolutely loved working with the watercolor. I might try incorporating that into my designs more often!

What do you think? What do you do to keep the January blues away?

  1. To keep the January Blues away I get a bunch of inspiration from other bloggers and YouTube. Plus cleaning out my apartment has kept me pretty busy and it doesn't require me to go out into the cold outside. Also I love your work!
